How Do You Get Swim In Pokemon Fire Red

For aspiring Pokemon trainers venturing through the Kanto region in Pokemon Fire Red, navigating waterways is essential to uncover hidden areas, encounter rare Pokemon, and progress through the main storyline.
The ability to swim in Pokemon Fire Red is not inherently available from the start. Trainers must first obtain the HM03 Surf, a Hidden Machine that teaches the Surf move to compatible Pokemon, and then fulfill a specific in-game requirement before the move can be used outside of battle.
Obtaining HM03 Surf
The journey to acquire Surf begins in Celadon City, a bustling metropolis located to the west of Vermilion City.
Trainers must infiltrate the Rocket Hideout, a multi-leveled underground base controlled by Team Rocket. After defeating the Rocket Grunts and solving the puzzles within, trainers will eventually face off against the Team Rocket boss, Giovanni.
Upon defeating Giovanni in the Rocket Hideout, trainers can then proceed to the Safari Zone, located west of Fuchsia City.
Navigating the Safari Zone
The Safari Zone is a unique area where trainers can catch Pokemon using Safari Balls and cannot battle wild Pokemon directly. Trainers are limited by a step count, and the goal is to find Secret House before running out of steps.
Within the Secret House, an old man will reward the player with HM03 Surf.
Using Surf Outside of Battle
Acquiring HM03 Surf is only the first step. To use Surf outside of battle, trainers must defeat the Gym Leader of Fuchsia City, Koga, the Poison-type Pokemon expert.
Defeating Koga earns trainers the Soul Badge, which grants the ability to use Surf in the overworld.
Once the Soul Badge is obtained, select a Pokemon in the party that has learned Surf. Selecting "Use" outside of battle will allow trainers to traverse water routes and explore previously inaccessible areas.
Significance and Implications
The ability to swim opens up vast new areas in the Kanto region, holding crucial items, Pokemon, and progression points. Water routes connect various towns and cities, allowing trainers to bypass land-based obstacles and discover hidden secrets.
Rare and powerful Pokemon, such as Water-types, can only be found by surfing, enriching the trainer's team composition. Surf is also vital to progressing through the main storyline, as it is needed to reach certain Gyms and progress through the Victory Road.
Mastering the method to use Surf is vital to enhance your Pokemon experience.
