Around 1728 BC, near Dothan (Genesis 37:1-36), Joseph's brothers seized him, stripped him of his ornate tunic – a symbol of his favored status – and cast him into a pit.
He was later sold into slavery to a caravan of Ishmaelites and Midianites heading toward Egypt. Joseph was then resold to Potiphar, captain of Pharaoh’s guard.
Betrayal and Enslavement
In Egypt, Joseph served faithfully in Potiphar’s household, quickly earning his master’s trust. He oversaw Potiphar’s estate, but falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife, Joseph was unjustly imprisoned.
Records from the Tel Kabri excavations (Israel) describe elaborate Minoan-style palaces built in the 18th century BC, around the time Joseph would have arrived in Egypt, reflecting the societal opulence that was available at the time.
Even in prison, Joseph's reputation for honesty and competence grew. He interpreted the dreams of two fellow prisoners, the royal cupbearer and baker, accurately predicting their respective fates.
The Pharaoh's Dreams
Two years later, Pharaoh himself was plagued by unsettling dreams – seven healthy cows devoured by seven gaunt ones, and seven full heads of grain swallowed by seven thin ones.
No one in Egypt could decipher these visions until the cupbearer remembered Joseph. According to biblical texts, Pharaoh immediately summoned him from the dungeon.
Joseph, attributing his gift to God, interpreted the dreams as a warning of seven years of abundance to be followed by seven years of severe famine across the land.
Exaltation to Ruler
Impressed by Joseph’s wisdom and insight, Pharaoh appointed him governor over all of Egypt. This extraordinary promotion occurred around 1715 BC, making Joseph second only to Pharaoh in power.
Historical records, while not explicitly naming Joseph, indicate a period of significant administrative reorganization and large scale grain storage during this era. There were extensive irrigation systems built to make sure there was enough grain stored.
Pharaoh renamed him Zaphnath-Paaneah and gave him Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, as his wife (Genesis 41:45). He was approximately 30 years old.
Preparing for Famine
As governor, Joseph implemented a strategic plan to collect and store vast quantities of grain during the seven years of plenty. This foresight proved crucial when the famine struck, not only in Egypt, but also in the surrounding lands.
The famine, lasting from approximately 1708 BC to 1701 BC, brought people from across the region to Egypt seeking food from Joseph’s storehouses.
