Okay, let's talk Fairy Tail. Specifically, the Tartaros Arc. And even MORE specifically, the first episode of the English dub.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking. "Oh no, here comes the hate!" But hear me out. I might have a... slightly unpopular opinion.

Tartaros: The Build-Up!

Remember that feeling? The hype? Tartaros was supposed to be the baddest of the bad. Like, the Alvarez Empire before the Alvarez Empire was even a glint in Zeref's eye.

The first episode sets the stage. We get a glimpse of these super-evil, demon-y dudes. They are ready to tear down everything Fairy Tail holds dear.

And the English dub? Well, it's... fine. Solid, even. But did it *fully* capture the earth-shattering dread? Hmm.

The Voice Acting Question

Look, the voice actors are talented. No question. They put in the work. I appreciate them all!

But sometimes, I feel like the English dub just doesn't *quite* reach the same level of intensity as the original Japanese. Maybe it's the nuances of the language. Maybe it's just me.

The lines are delivered well, the emotions are there but something is missing. Maybe a little more yelling? I'm joking... kind of.

Unlocking the Magic

Okay, picture this. Erza is fighting. She's fierce. She's a total badass.

And the dub? It delivers her lines with power. We get that strength. But I feel like it's a little less scream and bit more dialogue.

Don't get me wrong, it's good. It's just... I wanted MORE. That's just me and my expectations!

Where's the Boom?

Tartaros had explosions galore! Magic beams flying everywhere! The English dub captures the action, absolutely.

But did it fully translate the "OH MY GOODNESS EVERYTHING IS ON FIRE" feeling? Debatable. The dub has a clear sound effects, but maybe a little less of the punch I expect.

Maybe I wanted more dramatic music swells? More over-the-top reactions? I am aware I might be asking for the impossible, but the hype was enormous!

Before anyone comes at me with pitchforks, let me reiterate: I enjoy the Fairy Tail English dub. I wouldn't watch it if I didn't!

I just think the first episode of the Tartaros arc, in particular, felt like it was holding back a little. Like it was tiptoeing around the edge of total insanity, rather than diving in headfirst.

Maybe the English dub of future episodes gets wilder? I need to binge watch again, for science!

It's All Subjective

Ultimately, it's a matter of personal preference. Some people might prefer the more restrained approach of the English dub. And that's totally fine!

I just wanted a little more oomph. A little more raw emotion. A little more "holy crap, the world is ending!"
