How To Draw A Real Life Heart

Alright, friends, Romans, heart-drawing enthusiasts! Let's ditch those perfectly symmetrical, Valentine's Day hearts for a second. We're going rogue! We're going real. Ready to unleash your inner artist (even if your inner artist usually draws stick figures)?
Step 1: Observe the Subject
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Observe? I thought this was about drawing!" Trust me. You wouldn't try to bake a cake without knowing what a cake looks like, right? (Unless you're going for abstract expressionism in baking, which, hey, I support!).
So, where do you find a real-life heart? Well, unless you're a medical professional (and if you are, you probably don't need this guide!), peeking inside a person isn't the best option. Thank goodness for butcher shops and anatomy books!
But let's be honest, who wants to stare at that? Instead, think about what the heart represents: LOVE! And love is kind of lopsided, messy, and totally imperfect.
Step 2: The Lopsided Pear (Sort Of)
Think of the general shape. It's not a perfect anything! It's more like a slightly squished pear that's been on a wild rollercoaster ride.
So, grab your pencil (or crayon, or glitter glue - no judgment!) and start with a vague, pear-ish shape. Don't make it too perfect, okay? Remember, imperfection is key!
Let one side bulge out a little more than the other. Maybe even add a tiny bump on one side, like it’s stubbed its toe. (Hearts have toes, right? Let's say they do!).
Step 3: The Great Divide (Not Politically!)
Now, for the top! Forget those perfect symmetrical humps. This is where the magic happens!
Imagine you're drawing two very slightly lopsided hills that are kind of grumpy at each other. One might be a bit higher, a bit wider, a bit…moodier. Embrace the moodiness!
Don't make them touch perfectly at the top. Leave a little gap, a little space for secrets, for whispers of love and maybe even a little bit of heartburn. It's realistic.
Step 4: The Veiny Details (Optional, but Fun!)
Okay, we're getting serious now! (Just kidding, we're still having fun!). Let's add some "veins." I’m putting that in quotes because we're artists, not surgeons.
Draw a few squiggly lines coming out of the top of your heart. Some thick, some thin. Think of them like roads leading to and from your heart.
They don't need to be perfectly straight or evenly spaced. Heck, add a little loop-de-loop on one of them if you're feeling particularly adventurous. Let your inner vein artist shine!
Step 5: The "Is it a Heart?" Test
Stand back and admire your creation! Does it vaguely resemble a heart? Great! Does it look like it’s been through some stuff? Even better! Does it look unique and slightly weird? You've nailed it!
If someone asked, "Is that a heart?" and you replied, "Well, it's my heart," you've officially succeeded. You've drawn a real-life heart! Congratulations!
Now go forth and spread your wonderfully imperfect heart drawings throughout the land. The world needs more lopsided love!
Remember, there is only one you in all time, this expression is unique. - Martha Graham
