Movie With Toy Soldiers That Come To Life

Okay, let's talk about something important. Critically important, even. It involves miniature mayhem and childhood dreams.
Specifically, I want to discuss movies where toy soldiers magically come to life. Yes, those plastic warriors ready to wage a small-scale war.
Is Small Soldiers Actually Good?
Now, I know what you're thinking. The obvious choice is Toy Story. But I'm not talking about friendly toys. Think a bit more… aggressively.
I’m thinking more about the 1998 film, Small Soldiers.
Here’s a potentially unpopular opinion: I unironically love this movie. A lot. More than I probably should.
Don't get me wrong. I appreciate Toy Story's sentimentality. But something about the Commando Elite and the Gorgonites clashing in suburbia just hits different.
A Dose of Nostalgia
Maybe it's nostalgia. The late 90s were a weird and wonderful time. Oversized clothes and dial-up internet, anyone?
Maybe it's the sheer absurdity of it all. Goody, the leader of the Gorgonites is voiced by Tommy Lee Jones. Who thought of that casting choice?
Or maybe, just maybe, it’s the sheer chaos of tiny plastic dudes destroying everything.
The Appeal of Controlled Chaos
Think about it. The Commando Elite are programmed to destroy Gorgonites. The Gorgonites just want to live in peace and make arts and crafts.
A simple premise. But it's executed with such gleeful mayhem. Houses are wrecked! Lawnmowers are weaponized! It’s pure cinematic anarchy.
It's definitely not Pixar-level animation. But the practical effects are surprisingly impressive. Especially considering it came out before CGI was so prevalent.
Why It Works (For Me, Anyway)
I will say, it does have some moments that haven't aged perfectly. The early CGI looks a bit rough around the edges.
However, the overall message still resonates. It's a story about prejudice, acceptance, and the dangers of blind obedience.
Plus, let's be honest, who hasn't wanted their toys to come to life at some point? Even if they’re slightly homicidal.
And the movie has aged surprisingly well, too. I watched it recently with my kids, and they loved it. Even if they didn’t understand the 90's references.
Is It Underrated?
So, is Small Soldiers an underrated masterpiece? Probably not.
But is it a fun, action-packed, and surprisingly thought-provoking movie about toy soldiers coming to life? Absolutely.
And sometimes, that’s all you need. Don’t @ me!
I am not saying it is a better movie than Toy Story but it has certain qualities that make it unique!
If you haven't seen it in a while, I highly recommend giving Small Soldiers another watch.
You might just rediscover a nostalgic favorite. Or, at the very least, appreciate the chaotic brilliance of Tommy Lee Jones voicing a sensitive Gorgonite.
It's an experience.
One last thought, remember when toy commercials were actually... good? Small Soldiers had some epic marketing.
I rest my case.
