Neil Finn Song Of The Lonely Mountain Extended Version

Okay, let's talk about something that's been bugging me. It involves hobbits, dragons, and a ridiculously catchy song.
I'm talking about Neil Finn's "Song of the Lonely Mountain." You know, the one from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey?
The Original, We All Know and Love
The theatrical version is great! Short, sweet, and perfectly sets the mood. It's like a little musical appetizer before the epic adventure begins.
It evokes the right amount of nostalgia and foreboding. A proper sing-along for dwarves, if you will. So, what's the problem?
The Extended Cut: A Dwarf's Tale Gone Wild
Then came the Extended Edition of the film. And with it, an extended version of the song. This is where things get... interesting.
Suddenly, we're treated to several more verses. I mean, Neil Finn is a genius, no doubt! But more isn't always better.
I feel like I'm committing a Hobbit-sized crime here. But it has to be said: I prefer the shorter version.
Unpopular Opinion Alert!
I know, I know. Some of you are clutching your Lord of the Rings box sets in horror. "More Neil Finn is ALWAYS better!" you cry.
Hear me out. The extended version feels... repetitive. It loses some of the punch of the original.
It's like someone decided to explain the entire history of Middle-earth in song. By the time it ends, you're ready for a nap in the Shire.
It kinda drags on. And I start thinking about second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon... you get the idea.
Pacing is Key, My Precious
The original song is a perfect little gem. It's concise, impactful, and leaves you wanting more. Like a good movie trailer, it whets the appetite without giving away the whole feast.
The extended version, however, feels like the whole feast AND the leftovers. I find myself hitting the fast-forward button. Sacrilege, I know!
The shorter version just fits the movie's pacing better. It knows when to end. A master of timing!
Maybe It's Just Me... Or Is It?
Perhaps I'm alone in this opinion. Maybe I'm just not appreciating the sheer lyrical brilliance of extended dwarf-song.
But I suspect there are others out there. Secretly nodding their heads in agreement. Afraid to voice their dissent for fear of Tolkien-fan wrath.
So, I'm putting it out there. The short version of "Song of the Lonely Mountain" reigns supreme! Change my mind.
Don't get me wrong, Neil Finn is a legend. I just think less is more in this particular case. He could be the master of catchy melodies.
It's a testament to the original song's brilliance. That even a Neil Finn extended version, while lovely, doesn't quite reach the same heights.
So, there you have it. My controversial, possibly heretical, opinion. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to listen to the original version again. And maybe have a second breakfast.
I'm going to hid in the Shire from the angry mobs now. Just kidding (mostly)!
But seriously, what do you think?
