Okay, let’s talk Pink Floyd. Specifically, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. You know, the one with all the beds on the album cover?
It's a visual masterpiece, agreed. But the music inside? That's where things get...interesting.
The Floyd Without...Floyd?
Let's be honest. This album is basically David Gilmour plus some studio musicians. Roger Waters was long gone.
Did it still sound like Pink Floyd? Sort of. But like a Pink Floyd impersonator. A really good one, mind you.
Think of it as Pink Floyd: The Tribute Band. A very successful tribute band. Playing in stadiums.
The Good Stuff (Probably)
"Learning to Fly" is catchy. Admit it. You've sung along in your car, haven't you?
It’s radio-friendly. It's got that 80s synth vibe. It’s basically the musical equivalent of a frosted tips haircut.
And "On the Turning Away" is pretty good too. Emotional. Guitary. Standard Gilmour fare.
The Rest...Well...
The rest of the album? It kinda washes over you, doesn't it? Like a gentle, slightly boring wave.
Lots of echo. Lots of reverb. Lots of...stuff happening. But does it actually go anywhere?
Some tracks feel like extended guitar solos searching for a song. A musical scavenger hunt where the treasure is more echo.
Unpopular Opinion Time
Here's where I might get some flak. I think A Momentary Lapse of Reason is...overrated. There, I said it.
Don't get me wrong. Gilmour is a guitar god. But a guitar god needs a good song to work with, right?
This album feels like he had all the ingredients but forgot the recipe. A very expensive, high-tech recipe.
The Production...Oh, the Production!
It's SO 80s. So slick. So…processed. You could probably bounce a quarter off it.
Remember those gated reverb drums? They are EVERYWHERE. Like a time capsule of questionable audio choices.
Less cowbell. More…subtlety? Maybe? Just a thought.
It's Still Pink Floyd (Sort Of)
Look, I'm not saying it's a bad album. Just...not a great Pink Floyd album. There's a difference.
It sold a ton of copies. People love it. My opinion doesn't change reality. I know.
But sometimes, you just gotta speak your truth. Even if your truth is that A Momentary Lapse of Reason is basically elevator music for guitarists.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I need to listen to it again. (Probably not).
So, put on your headphones. Crank up "Learning to Fly." And let's agree to disagree. Respectfully, of course.
After all, even mediocre Pink Floyd is still better than most other bands. Right? Right?
