Really Going To Miss You By Smokey Robinson

Okay, confession time. We all have those songs we’re *supposed* to love, right? Songs that are considered classics, untouchable masterpieces. Well, I'm about to say something potentially scandalous.
And no, I’m not going to bash Smokey Robinson. He’s a legend. The man wrote some serious bangers.
The Elephant in the Room: "Really Gonna Miss You"
Here it is: "Really Gonna Miss You" gives me… the ick. Yes, I said it. It's a classic, sure. But am I really gonna miss *it*?
Now, before you grab your pitchforks, hear me out! It's not about the sentiment itself. Missing someone is universal.
It’s more about *how* that sentiment is delivered. And honestly, sometimes it feels a little… much.
The Kiddie Choir Conundrum
Let’s talk about the kids. That choir of children singing about loss? Super sweet in theory. But in execution? It veers dangerously close to saccharine overdose.
Don't get me wrong, I love kids. But their presence in *this* particular song almost feels manipulative.
I can practically see the record executives rubbing their hands together: "Think of the tears we'll elicit!"
The Melodrama Meter
The song, bless its heart, is undeniably dramatic. Every note is dripping with sorrow. It's like a soap opera in musical form.
Sometimes, though, I just need a little more subtlety. A little less...wailing. You know?
I prefer my heartbreak with a side of quiet introspection, not a full-blown theatrical production. Give me Marvin Gaye over a full-blown orchestra any day.
Is It Just Me? (Probably Not)
I know, I know. I'm probably committing some kind of cardinal sin by admitting this. The song is beloved! It's a staple at funerals!
But I can't shake the feeling that it’s just a tad… overwrought. Maybe I'm just emotionally stunted.
Or maybe, just maybe, there are others out there who feel the same way. (Please tell me I'm not alone!)
The Smokey Exception
Look, I'm not saying Smokey Robinson is incapable of writing a good ballad. Absolutely not! "Tracks of My Tears?" A masterpiece. "Ooo Baby Baby?" Timeless perfection.
He is a lyrical genius. No argument here. He can twist words and melodies into pure emotional gold.
But "Really Gonna Miss You?" For me, it just doesn't quite hit the mark like his other hits.
The Verdict (Maybe)
So, am I truly going to miss this song if it magically disappears from the face of the earth? Probably not.
Will I judge you if it brings you to tears? Of course not! Music is subjective. And we all connect to different things.
But for me, it's a skip. I'll take some Motown happiness instead, thank you very much.
I fully expect to be ostracized for this. But hey, someone had to say it, right? What do you think, truth or blasphemy?
