Star Blazers Space Battleship Yamato 2202

Okay, let’s talk Star Blazers. Or, as some call it, Space Battleship Yamato. Specifically, 2202. Prepare yourselves. I have opinions.
I know, I know. The original Yamato? Classic! A legend! But hear me out.
The Problem with Remakes
Remakes are tricky, right? They can be amazing. Or... they can miss the mark completely. It’s like trying to improve pizza. Is that even possible?
Yamato 2202 definitely tried to "improve" things. That's an understatement. Maybe a little too hard.
The Story's a Bit... Much
Remember the simple quest of the original? Save Earth! 2202? Well, that's still there. But then add time travel. And reincarnation. And a love triangle that makes zero sense.
It’s like the writers threw every sci-fi trope into a blender. And hoped for the best. Spoiler: I think they put in too much ice.
Don't get me wrong, the plot of 2202 have interesting ideas. Just... dial it back to seven or eight!
The Characters: Where's the Charm?
The original Yamato crew? Icons! Kodai! Yuki! Dr. Sado! They had this... grit. They were flawed. They felt real.
2202? Everyone's suddenly way more angsty. They overthink every decision. Plus, the original main characters are overshadowed by new characters.
I miss the simplicity. I miss the camaraderie. I miss the space booze that Dr. Sado was always brewing.
Kodai just mopes for almost the entire show! Lighten up, space captain!
The Space Battles Look Great, Though
Okay, credit where credit is due. The visuals in 2202 are stunning. Seriously. Space battles have never looked this good.
Explosions! Lasers! Missiles! It's a visual feast. So, if you just want to watch pretty spaceships blow each other up? You're in luck.
The Yamato itself looks amazing. But it's like putting a beautiful engine on a car with square wheels.
My Unpopular Opinion (Brace Yourselves!)
I actually prefer some of the less-loved aspects. The complex plot, even if convoluted, kept me thinking. The upgraded visuals were genuinely impressive. The Gatlantis are cool villains.
But let's be honest. The original Space Battleship Yamato had heart. It had a certain magic. 2202, while technically impressive, feels…manufactured.
It's like comparing a homemade meal to a fancy, five-star restaurant. One has soul. The other has presentation. Which one do you really crave?
Maybe I'm just an old softy. Maybe I'm too attached to the original. But Yamato 2202, for all its ambition, just didn't quite capture the magic.
But if you want to argue about it, hit me up on space Twitter. I'm ready.
And hey, at least it got me thinking about Space Battleship Yamato again. That's something, right?
