I know, I know. Some people adore this movie. They'll defend the frame rate to their dying breath. Good for them!

But I'm here to whisper a truth. A truth that might get me exiled to Mordor. Ready?

I think... maybe... it's a tad too long. There. I said it.

Don't get me wrong! I love Middle-earth. I practically grew up in the Shire. My imaginary best friend was a hobbit named Pipkin Shortfoot.

But even Pipkin would admit this movie could've used a good trim.

The 3D: Is It Worth It?

Now, the 3D Blu-Ray part. That's the real question, isn't it? Does it actually add anything?

Well, sometimes. When the dwarves are throwing dishes in Bilbo's house? Yes! It's chaotic and fun and things are flying at your face!

But during long, drawn-out scenes of walking? Not so much. It just makes you feel like you're walking... in 3D.

And those high frame rates? It makes the movie looked sped up. I prefer the cinematic blur of 24 fps. It makes it feel like a movie, not a BBC drama.

"It's like watching a play!" someone once told me. And maybe that's the problem for me. I wanted a movie.

Unexpected Length

Seriously, though. That journey was unexpected. I expected a fun adventure. What I got was a three-hour tour with musical numbers.

And the songs! Oh, the songs. Are they good songs? Sure. Do they stop the movie dead in its tracks? Absolutely.

I understand Peter Jackson wanted to give us the full Tolkien experience. I appreciate the effort. I really do.

But sometimes, less is more. A tighter edit could have made this a masterpiece. Instead, it’s just…long.

Remember that scene where they're all eating? It goes on forever! We get it, dwarves like to eat!

The Good Stuff (Because There Is Some!)

Okay, I've been pretty harsh. It's not all bad. There are things I genuinely love about this movie.

Martin Freeman as Bilbo is perfect. He captures the hobbit's awkwardness and bravery perfectly. He really is the best casting.

Gollum is still terrifyingly amazing. Andy Serkis is a genius. No arguments there.

And the visuals are stunning! Middle-earth never looked so good. Especially on Blu-Ray (even if it's slightly too crisp for my taste).

The action sequences are also fantastic. The Goblin Town chase is a highlight. A genuine thrill ride.

So, should you buy The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D Blu-Ray? It depends.

Are you a die-hard Tolkien fan? Probably. Are you a completionist collector? Definitely.

But if you're just looking for a fun, engaging fantasy movie? Maybe borrow it first. Or watch the theatrical cut. It shaves off some time.

Just be prepared for a long journey. An unexpectedly long journey.

And maybe skip some of the songs. Unless you really, really like dwarf ballads.
