Winchester Sxp Long Beard 20 Gauge Review

Let's talk turkey… guns, that is. Specifically, the Winchester SXP Long Beard 20 Gauge. Now, I know what you're thinking: "A 20 gauge? For turkeys? Are you nuts?" Maybe a little.
But hear me out! I have… opinions. And some of them might be unpopular. Prepare yourselves.
The Little Gun That Could (Maybe)
The SXP Long Beard is, well, long. It’s got a good reach for those shy Toms. It’s a pump-action, so you know it's reliable.
Plus, pumps are just fun. Admit it.
Lightweight Champion (for a Reason)
One of the biggest selling points is the weight. Or lack thereof. You can carry this thing all day without feeling like you wrestled a bear.
However, that lightness comes with a price. Recoil. Oh, the recoil.
It’s not terrible, but it's noticeable. Especially with those turkey loads.
My Unpopular Opinion: 20 Gauge is Underrated
Okay, here it comes. My completely subjective and possibly insane take: a 20 gauge is often plenty for turkeys. Provided you do your homework.
Shot placement is key, obviously. And you need good ammo. No cutting corners there.
But a well-placed shot from a 20 gauge can drop a Tom just as effectively as a 12. Maybe even cleaner. Less collateral damage, you know?
Patterning is Paramount (duh)
The SXP Long Beard has a tight choke. Which is good. You want a tight pattern when you're aiming for the head and neck.
But you absolutely MUST pattern your gun. Different loads shoot differently. It's not rocket science, but it is crucial.
Don't just assume your favorite shell will magically create a perfect pattern. Test, test, test!
The "Budget-Friendly" Argument (Sort Of)
The Winchester SXP line is generally considered affordable. Which is great. Turkeys are expensive enough without breaking the bank on a shotgun.
But remember, cheap isn't always better. Factor in the cost of good ammo and a decent optic (if you're into that sort of thing).
Suddenly, that "budget-friendly" shotgun isn't quite so budget-friendly anymore. Just something to keep in mind.
Things I Wish Were Different
The trigger could be better. Let's be honest. It's not awful, but it's not great either.
And the finish? It's… functional. Not exactly pretty. But hey, it's a turkey gun, not a beauty queen.
A little more padding on the stock would be nice too. My shoulder would thank you, Winchester.
Final Verdict: Worth a Look (Especially for Smaller Shooters)
The Winchester SXP Long Beard 20 Gauge isn't perfect. But it’s a solid option, especially for smaller-framed shooters or those who prefer a lighter gun.
Just remember to pattern your gun, use good ammo, and practice your shot placement. And maybe invest in a good recoil pad.
Ultimately, the best turkey gun is the one you're most comfortable and confident with. If that happens to be an SXP Long Beard, then rock on!
Just don't blame me if your shoulder is sore.
